5 x 5 Hybrid Bodyweight Workout

I’ve got an ugly confession to make.

I’m getting old!

This is what I mean…

About 5 years ago I started training competitively for the
sport of Strongman.

I was lifting stones, carrying kegs and pressing HEAVY
logs for TONS OF VOLUME.

To say that my training was masochistic is an understatement.

For days after each workout I was left with only enough
energy to carry myself home from the gym and collapse on
the living room floor.

My children wanted to play…. but daddy was too tired.

I trained like this for about three years until I injured myself
and needed surgery.

This forced me to reconsider my training goals AND my
purpose in life. This is when I began using the phrase,
“Become The Strongest Version Of Yourself.”

I learned that strength had far, far more to do with becoming
the kind of person who excels in ALL areas of life, not just
the gym.

So of course my training had to change.

I had to train in order to keep much of my strength, but
without the fatigue and potential for injury.

This is what I did…

I began training with VERY LOW VOLUME while keeping
the intensity very high.

Dead lifts, heavy pressing and front squats were still a big
part of the program, but I never went over 5 reps and I allowed
a lot of rest in between sets.

I also began adding more gymnastic exercises to my workouts.

You may have seen some of my videos doing this on YouTube.

It’s funny… at the same time that I started this new routine my
buddy Zach Even Esh began to train in a similar way.

He calls it Bodyweight Bodybuilding.

Although some of the volume he uses is a bit higher than mine,
his workouts are very good.

My favorite routine that he offers is called the 5 x 5 Bodyweight

Even though I will be releasing my version of this kind of hybrid
barbell / gymnastics training workout in a few months, I call
it The Grow Stronger Method… I highly recommend Zach’s book
for anyone looking to GROW STRONGER, get leaner and still feel
fresh and energetic after your workouts.

Like I said, my new book will be ready soon. But since I think
the world of Zach and know that you will like his book, you
should still check it out.

Besides, he put it on sale this week for us to try.

Grow Stronger,

  1. I have the energy problems too, sometimes I lack the energy to go for more than 2 rounds with my girlfriend like I normally do and I always knew it was my strentgh training that was affecting me, I will definitely check this book out

  2. I also have a question about my sleeping habits, sometimes I would wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning bursting with energy and then I fall back asleep and wake up groggy at 7 or 8 am when I’m suppose to wake up. Because of this my workouts are starting to suffer because I feel like I didn’t get any sleep. Do you have any ideas to why this is happening to me? Maybe I’m overtraining?
